History
In the Beginning
Its 1794 in the newly established Berkshire County a cider mill with a big paddle wheel driven by the waters of Wampenum Brook is built by Oliver Luce. He sold an acre of land in front of the mill beside the creek and the county dirt road to the city of Pittsfield as a one room school site in 1843. The school house was built in the Greek revival style.
The Transformation
In 1984, Karen Clydesdale, a skilled designer, bought the school from the city with a promise to renovate the building without modifying the exterior. The building was gutted followed by new wide plank pine floors and modern utilities. The exterior remained unchanged with the original eight foot windows and red clap boards surrounded by a white picket fence and flag waving in the breeze. The Reality
For thirty years, Morewood has been a cherished vacation home year round for hundreds of visitors and locals in Berkshire County. As you enter the interior you experience an amazing transformation with a state of the art kitchen and even a sleeping loft added above the great room. Relax inside a centuries old school house still overlooking Wampenum Brook.
